What is a Propeller Blade Tip?
The blade tip is the maximum reach of the blade from the center of the hub. As the propeller spins around the crankshaft, the speed of the prop blades is highest at the tip and slowest at the root. For a full rotation, the tip of the blade has to travel a much further distance than the blade root, in the same amount of time. That's why the blade angle is greatest at the root, and the least at the tip. When casting new custom propeller blades, it’s important to make sure each section is made with precision and accuracy. The blades are some of the most vitally important parts of the propeller, and there are several components to one:
- Blade Back – Suction side. Forward side of the blade (surface facing the bow).
- Blade Face – Pressure Side, Pitch Side. Aft side of the blade (surface facing the stern).
- Blade Number – Equal to the number of blades on the propeller.
- Blade Root – Fillet area. The region of transition from the blade surfaces and edges to the hub periphery. The area where the blade attaches to the hub.
